Collecting Horse Racing Memories

I love collecting horse racing memorabilia because I get to keep a little piece of racing history.

Monmouth Park’s biggest day of the year is the Haskell. There is great racing and a really big crowd. A lot of the crowd comes to increase their collection of racing memorabilia with the traditional Haskell Hat giveaway. Monmouth has been giving hats away since at least 1988. Day 18 - June 25, 2011

These plays assume that the only race that will be on the turf is the 10th, the G3 Boiling Springs. Also I tried to figure which horses would scratch out of the other turf races 4 and 8. So in the 50¢ Pick 5 I will offer one caveman ticket that could be altered by scratches.

In the 50¢ Place Pick 6 let's go: 4,11, (7) with 4,5,6 with 2,3 with 4 with 6,8 with 3,4,5. That's our max play of $36. If there is a scratch somewhere we may substitute the (7) into the first leg.

9:21pm - update - 3 out of 5 and 4 out of 6 today. The Pick 6 started well, though.
Sunday is a day off, as I have to take my son to sleep away camp.

Day 17 - Friday, June 24, 2011

10:15am - update - OFF the turf today. That will change races 5,7, and 9. So, big changes to come!

2:35pm-update-The pick 5 play has become: 1,3,7 with 2,4 with 4,5,6 with 2 with 5,7,8 for $27. The Place Pick 6, which has already become a loss because the first leg had a 55-1 and 5-1, was 1,4,5 with 1,5, with 1,7 with 2,4 with 5,6 with 2 for $24.

6:01pm-update-In the Pick 5, we were 3 out of 5 with 2 second place finishes. The Place Pick 6 produced 5 out of 6 with one exacta. Once again, so close, to the $512.20 payout.

Here are preliminary picks for Day 17 at Monmouth. Check back tomorrow for changes if the weather is wet. I have had a good week thus far, so I hope I can keep rolling. In the 50¢ Pick 5, there is an all top choice pick for $24 and one ticket that includes those horses and 3 back-ups for a total of $81.In the 50¢ Place Pick 6, where we are still ahead $124 for the meeting, the ticket is: 1,4,5 with 5, with 1,7 with 4,5 with 4,6 with 1,3,5. The cost is $36, which I have established has my maximum investment. I hope you had a chance to read my blog about "Putting the Sting on the Place Pick 6" on HorseRacingNation.com. It is linked in the previous blog.

Putting the Sting on the Place Pick 6

Since I have only been blogging for a month or so, you may not know that I have a tendency to get fascinated with certain activities. Lately I have become obsessed with the Place Pick 6 wager that is offered at Monmouth...

Read the rest of my HorseRacingNation.com blog about the Place Pick 6.
http://www.horseracingnation.com/blogs/Monmouth/Putting_the_Sting_on_the_Place_Pick_6_123

Remember that we are still $124 ahead in the Place Pick 6 for the first 16 days of racing.

Day 16 - Sunday, June 19, 2011 - Father's Day

Going up late is a small 50¢ Place Pick 6: 6 with 2,3 with 8,9 with 4,5,6 with 8, 12 with 1. Cost is $12.

Day 15 - Saturday, June 18, 2011 - Some Place Pick 6 Theory

Wow, I am still upset about yesterday's Pick 6. We just missed a really good pay day. My belief with the Place Pick 6 is that you can only make the ticket but so big because you can easily pick 6 and have a losing payout. Success hinges on catching an exacta and/or sharing the place spot with some longshots. Both of those happened for us yesterday, but we blanked on the first leg. We hit two exactas and had a 9-1 horse share the place spots with a big longshot. Once again, I say arghhh!

Anyway, onward and upward with the Saturday card, which includes a race 8 that is about as wide open as any race I have ever seen. The $65K conditional claimer/NW3 is scheduled as a route on the turf. Because of the nature of the card the 50¢ Place Pick 6 ticket is taking on an unusual shape with 3 singles and 3 wide spreads: 8 with 3,4,5,8 with 3 with 3 with 1,4,5,8,9,11 with 2,3,6. That has a cost of $36.

The 50¢ Pick 5 ticket will have a similar shape, starting with 2 singles and then 3 spread races. I have a busy Saturday, so I will not be able to post scratches, so be sure to check them to see how the tickets may be changed.

GOOD LUCK!

UPDATE - 10:10pm - With the scratch of the #3 in race 6 both of our plays in the Pick 5 and Pick 6 were wiped out. Sorry, I couldn't get revised plays posted. I hope some of you made some winning changes. There were 2 exactas in the Place Pick 6.

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Day 14 - Friday, June 17, 2011

UPDATE-5:00pm-After missing leg 1 of the pick 6, we went 5 for 5 the rest of the way. That included 2 exactas, so if we had hit the first leg we would have had 4 winning tickets! ARGHHH!

UPDATE-12:15pm-Another scratch, this time the #5 in race 6. So, I will substitute the #4 for the #5 in both the Pick 5 and Pick 6.

UPDATE
-11:08am-Scratch #1 in race 7. Still on the turf, main track is fast. That reduces the Pick 5 to $108. In the Place Pick 6 substitute the #4 in race 7, that play becomes: 4,5 with 2 with 5,6 with 2,4 with 1,2 with 4,6,8. Cost will still be
$24.

OK, is everybody all refreshed since Belmont weekend? Good, so let's go get it. In the 50¢ Pick 5 we will use one ticket because it turns out to be basically the same cost as using the backup tickets. Cost will be $144.
In the 50¢ Place Pick 6, where we are still up $172 for the meeting (the summary box is posted in the right margin), the ticket is: 4,5 with 2 with 5,6 with 1,2 with 1,2 with 4,6,8. Cost will be $24.

Day 13 - Sunday, June12, 2011

In Race 8 at Monmouth today, please be sure to root for #10 Pinelands Pete. Petey is a friend of AndyScoggin who ran big to finish second in the same conditioned race as today. If the track is wet and the weather is cool, watch out for Pinelands Pete! Read more about Petey at this link.

In the 50¢ Place Pick 6 today: 3,8 with 8 with 1,5 with 1,3,6 with 7, 10 with 6 for $12. Small play in the Pick 5 also: 5 with 1,3,6 with 7,10 with 2,3,6 with 2,4,9 for $27.

Good Luck and go Pinelands Pete!

9:20pm -update-4 out of 6 in Pick 6. 4 out of 5 in the Pick 5 and shame on me for missing the money. In leg 2, the McSorley, the 7-1 winner was General Perfect who won this race last year and is owned by the grandfather of one of my students. General Perfect with our other 4 winners paid over $600 for the 50¢ bet. Shame on me! Entries are already drawn for Friday's card!

Day 12 - June 11, 2011 - Belmont Stakes Day

Today we will branch out to the 50¢ Pick 4 at Belmont, in races 8-11, that has a guaranteed $1,000,000 pool. There I will give you two tickets each with a different horse singled. The first $24 play contains a single of Gio Ponti in the third leg: 1,5,7 with 1,2,5,9 with 4 with 4,5,9,12. Next, let's single Animal Kingdom in the Belmont, race 11: 1,5,7 with 1,2,5,9 with 2,4,7,9 with 9 which also costs $24.

At Monmouth the 50¢ Pick 5 is really tricky, so let's make a small ticket with two singles. That will cost $22.50 to start the sequence -- 7 with 9 with 5,6,8 with 7,9,10,11,12 with 1,2,5.

In the 50¢ Place Pick 6 the ticket will cost $36 -- 1,4 with 3,6 with 7 with 9,10 with 5,8,9 with 7, 11, 12.

SATURDAY - 11:45am - update - There was very little rain at Monmouth, so the track is fast and firm. Two significant scratches (1 and 5) from race 10, the last leg of the Pick 5. I will post some changes to the original Pick 5 ticket shortly.

12:15pm - update - Back after cashing a win bet in race 2 at BEL. Let's change the last leg of the MTH Pick 5 to include the 2,3,4. That makes the ticket the same cost-- 7 with 9 with 5,6,8 with 7,9,10,11,12 with 2,3,4.

1:30pm - update - 10-1 Sammy's Trip goes wire to wire in race 2 to give trainer Joseph Zoppi his first win of 2011! I love to see those small trainers win!

1:54pm - update - West Point owned 6/5 favorite goes down in race 3 at MTH. That leaves me alive in the pick 3. Time to get our Place Pick 6 going.

2:10 - update - Just got a scratch of the 9 horse in race 7 of Place Pick 6. So, replace it with the #2 making the ticket - 1,4 with 3,6 with 7 with 2,10 with 5,8,9 with 7, 11, 12.

2:35pm - update - Great start in Pick 6, with both 1 and 4 placing, so we have 2 winning tickets at this point.

2:45pm - update - I hit that pick 3, although nothing to brag about. We stayed alive in the Pick 6. Time to think more about our Pick 5.

3:20pm - update - Our Pick 5 play was scratched because we had the #9 singled in leg 2, but he was scratched. We are still alive in the Pick 6, as our single in leg 3 finished second. Let's get another exacta finish as we are left alive 2 x 3 x 3 the rest of the way.

3:50pm - update - Still alive in our Place Pick 6. Leg 4 had us share placing with a 13-1 shot, which will lead to a better payoff. We have 3 horses in each of the last 2 legs! View my Belmont Stakes picks on horseracingnation.com.

4:20pm - update - Out of BEL pick 4, I could not play Justin Philip, even now! We have at least 2 winning tickets going into the last leg of the Place Pick with the 7, 11, 12.

4:45pm - update - We lose the pick 6 by a head. Arghhh! We finished 3rd and 4th.

Remember, I will be giving live updates throughout the day. So, follow along for information from Monmouth and Belmont. GOOD LUCK!

Day 11 - Friday, June 10, 2011

Friday is essentially my last day of regular work until September, so let's celebrate by hitting some multi-race wagers at Monmouth. In the 50¢ Pick 5, I am offering all three levels of play, with a minimum of $4 and a maximum cost is $71. I think a couple of horses are standouts, so this has reduced the amount of money. However, there are some question marks with the weather. There is a 50% chance of showers or thunderstorms, so that could cause some problems. I will try and update if needed.

10:50am-update-Track is fast, turf is good, and it is sunny. There are only a few unimportant scratches, so let's hit it today!

6:06 pm -update - In the Pick 5, we went 3 out of 5. First leg finished 2nd and 3rd, second leg came 3rd and 4th. Then we hit the last 3 legs including both of our singles. The Pick 5 takes patience, all it takes is one good cash!

For the 50¢ Place Pick 6, where we are still up $234 for the first 10 days of the meeting, the cost will be $24. The ticket is 2,8 with 1,3,4 with 6,8 with 6,8 with 1,5 with 7. I would also recommend an additional $2 ticket of 8 with 4 with 6,8 with 6,8 with 1 with 7.

5:05 pm - update - Arghh!! In the Place Pick 6 we had 5 out of 6. That included 2 legs where we had exactas, so if we had gotten 6 out of 6 we would have had 4 winning tickets! We missed the 4th leg with a third place finish! The winning Pick 6 paid $44.40, ours would have probably been similar, but we would have had it 4 times!

Good Luck!

Belmont Weekend

Big weekend in racing coming up. I think I will spend Belmont Day in the pressbox at Monmouth. Along with our usual Pick 5 and Place Pick 6 action at Monmouth, I think I will post picks for the 50¢ one million dollar guaranteed all stakes Pick 4 from Belmont. That Pick 4 runs from race 8-11: covering the G2-7F Woody Stephens, the G1-1 mile turf JustAGame, the G1-1 1/4 mile turf Manhattan Handicap, and the G1-Belmont.

I hope to give live updates on both Monmouth and Belmont throughout the day, so you can watch the races from home or at the track and check out AndyScoggin's comments on your computer or smartphone.

I invite you to follow along on Saturday. If you do, please post a comment during the day. Let AndyScoggin know what you played. The blog has been getting a lot of hits. I'd like to hear from you!

"Sean Avery SCORES!" at Monmouth

The Longfellow Stakes at Monmouth Park produced another vintage race call by Triple Crown track announcer Larry Collmus, “Sean Avery coming by the eighth pole with a five length lead, pulling away as they come down to the wire, Sean Avery SCORES!”

Day 10 - Sunday, June 5, 2011

Day 10 - Feeling better about today's card, so let's attack the 50¢ Pick 5. Race 7 is a MSW in which only one horse has started and the #7 will be the top choice. He could run away with the race, but there are 6 first-timers in there, too, and a few of them show some promise. We will make two primary tickets one for $54. The other takes all in race 6 and singles #10 in race 7, that costs $63. There is one ticket with 3 back-ups in race 8 for $27. GOOD LUCK! With the scratch of the #7 in the first leg of the Pick 5, the cost went down to $36, $42, and $18 for the 3 tickets.
In the 50¢ Place Pick 6, the ticket will be small today - 5,6 with 1,5 with 7,9,10 with 7 with 10 with 3,7 for only $12. GOOD LUCK! Overall totals for the Place Pick 6 are posted in the right margin. In the third leg, the scratch of the #7 lowered the ticket cost to $6.

5:18pm - update - Place Pick 6 paid $117 for 50¢. We had 5 out of 6, missing on leg 5. Not bad for a $6 play.

5:38pm - update - We had 3 out of 5 in the Pick 5. The first leg was won by a horse from Parx, who was trained by a guy for whom I have NO respect. There's a story that has to do with the first horse I co-owned. Sorry everyone!

Day 9 - Saturday, June 4, 2011

Day 9 is a tough card for our Pick 5 and Pick 6 plays because of race 6. In race 6, the three best horses (11, 12, 13) are AE's and they are entered at Monmouth on Sunday in race 8. So, it is unlikely that they will go on Saturday, but if any of them do, they tower over the rest of the field.

Thus, AndyScoggin says only a 50¢ Place Pick 6 play today and it will be a bit complicated because of race 6. Let's go with: 3,5,7 with 1,4,7 with (in order of preference, playing only the first two that get in race 6) 11,12,13,4,2 with 5 with 1 with 4,7,10. Again, let's hope to catch an exacta in races 4, 5, 6, or 9 to give us multiple winning tickets. Cost will be $27.

7:28pm-update-It was a tough card today and we did get knocked out in race 6. Better luck tomorrow!

Update - Friday, June 3 - Monmouth Park

Our $24 play in the 50¢ Place Pick 6 at Monmouth hit today for $132, but our ticket had it twice. In race 5, the second leg, we had 2 horses place (also known as the exacta), so we collect $264! I hope all you AndyScoggin followers bet it!

Keeping track of the Place Pick 6 thus far, AndyScoggin shows a profit of $267.80, having posted plays on six of the eight days of the meet. We have hit the Place Pick 6 on three of the six days. On all three of those days of those days the play had two winning tickets. Let's keep trying Monmouth's new wager, it has been good to us thus far.

In the pick 5, we had winners in the first two legs and then had 3 places in a row.

Friday, June 3, 2011 - Day 8 - Monmouth

I have just a few days of school/work left and then I can really focus on racing. In the mean time I have a simple one ticket "caveman" play in the 50¢ Pick 5 for $54.
In the 50¢ Place Pick 6, which has been producing some good payouts lately, let's try: 4 with 1,4 with 3,5 with 1/1A,7,9 with 3,9 with 3,4. That's a cost of $24.
